Faces of Ryan White
A Birmingham News feature story on the University of Alabama’s 1917 Clinic, a Ryan White grantee, highlights their comprehensive and coordinated approach to HIV/AIDS care—and their work to engage and retain new patients in care. The 1917 Clinic has a system called Project Connect. Any new patient calling for a first appointment gets scheduled within a week. Upon intake, each new client is assigned to a four-person care team: a doctor, nurse practitioner, nurse, and social worker. This multi-disciplinary team approach ensures that enrolled clients are linked into a health care system that is accountable for their health care outcomes in partnership with the client. According to the Birmingham News article, the rate of no-show patients has dropped dramatically, from 31 percent in 2007 to just 18 percent as of 2009.
The number of patients at the 1917 Clinic has nearly doubled over the past decade—from 984 to 1735 (2000-2009); 40% of clients are on Medicare or Medicaid, 30% have no insurance. The 1917 Clinic serves clients in the Birmingham metropolitan area as well as a rural clientele, some of whom drive several hours to seek care. The 1917 Clinic was founded in 1988 by Dr. Michael Saag and is part of the University of Alabama’s network of health care services for underserved populations.
