Look Who Found TA Through TARGET
Decreasing Disparities in HIV/AIDS CareAs the Director of the Arkansas Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, Michelle R. Smith, PhD ensures there is a minority perspective throughout the Arkansas Department of Health's programs. Dr. Smith, along with her four team members, reaches out to the centers to offer guidance, tools and best practices, with a goal of improving health outcomes for all clients in the state of Arkansas.
While searching on the TARGET Center web site for TA products related to decreasing disparities, Michelle found a presentation entitled AIDS To Cultural Competence: Addressing Health Care Challenges for Women of Color Living with HIV/AIDS. The presentation was developed by the Center for Human Services (CHS) and was originally delivered at the 2010 Ryan White Grantee Meeting.
"This presentation provides guidance on ways to engage people into care and then to interact with clients in care, with an awareness of the different backgrounds that each client may come from," Dr. Smith said. For example, the presentation includes a list of English words and phrases which may be interpreted in different ways, depending on the client's culture.
Knowing that African American women are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, Dr. Smith plans to share this presentation with the HIV/AIDS/STD division of the Arkansas Department of Health. AIDS To Cultural Competence is just one of hundreds of presentations from the annual Ryan White Grantee Meetings and Clinical Conferences that are free to download, and conveniently available at any time on the TARGET Center web site.
