ACA March 31 Enrollment Deadline Extended--In Limited Circumstances

Wednesday, March 26, 2014
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Althought the deadline for Marketplace open enrollment was March 31, allowances for enrollment after this date are being granted under two broad categories.

  1. HHS has assured consumers (in federally faciliated marketplaces and state partnerships) whose enrollment applications are in process ("in line") will get covered. See Guidance for Issues on People "In Line" for the Federally-facilitated Marketplace at the end of the Initial Open Enrollment Period.
  2. HHS has announced that the enrollment period in the federally faciliated marketplace and state partnerships will be extended to mid-April for "complex cases," under limited circumstances. See Guidance for Issues on Special Enrollment Periods for Complex Cases in the Federally-facilitated Marketplace after the Initial Open Enrollment Period.

In the above "in line" guidance, HHS/CMS states that state-based marketplaces may elect to offer similar special enrollment periods.
