Jurisdictional Approach to Curing Hepatitis C among HIV/HCV Coinfected People of Color

About the Initiative

This initiative developed new HCV/HIV screening, care and treatment approaches in order to:

  • Increase jurisdiction-level capacity to provide comprehensive screening, care, and treatment for HCV among HIV/HCV co-infected Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clients.

  • Increase the numbers of HIV/HCV co-infected people who are diagnosed, treated, and cured of HCV infection.

  • Address health disparities among cure of HCV among persons of color living with HIV.

Five Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) jurisdictions implement HCV/HIV projects.

Three RWHAP Part A jurisdictions were funded:

  • Hartford Department of Health (Hartford, CT)
  • New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (New York, NY)
  • Philadelphia Department of Public Health (Philadelphia, PA)

The two RWHAP Part B projects were:

  • North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services

TA and Training Services

This project included training components to support the participating jurisdictions as well as the broader provider community.

State Health Departments Coordinating Center

The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) provided support to the jurisdictional sites as the State Health Departments Coordinating Center.

HIV Clinical Training and Curriculum Development

The AIDS Education and Training Centers Program (AETC), through the National Coordinating Resource Center and the regions that serve the funded jurisdictions, coordinated the development of a national curriculum to be used for self-directed learning by health care providers as well as by trainers of clinical teams across the United States and its territories. Participating regional AETCs included the MidAtlantic, Southeast, New England, South Central, and Northeast/Caribbean. Continuing education credits are offered for these online courses.

Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center (ETAC)

The ETAC provided technical assistance and capacity building support, multi-site evaluation, and coordination of publication and dissemination of best practices, lessons learned and other findings from the initiative. The RAND Corporation was the ETAC.
