IRS Pilot Tests Online Tax Filing Tool in 12 States

With the tax filing deadline just a few weeks away, the IRS recently launched a new pilot program called the IRS Direct File. This program is a free, mobile-friendly, tool for filing taxes, built by the IRS. It is available in English and Spanish with live in-app customer service.

During this pilot year, eligibility is limited to taxpayers with simple tax situations in 12 participating states. Participants will be screened by Direct File to make sure they are eligible before they invest the time in preparing a return. Participating states include California, Arizona, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.
