- MSM - Men who have Sex with Men
MSM comprise the majority of HIV/AIDS cases in the U.S., representing over half of those infected with HIV/AIDS. In 2022, among MSM getting medical care from the RWHAP, 90.2% achieved viral suppression. These rates varied across MSM populations, particularly MSM with unstable housing and younger MSM.
- Rural
Rural areas often face limited health care services and require travel across long distances to access care, with limited transportation options. Options for HIV care are often limited, with added barriers to care including stigma, which can serve as a deterrent from individuals seeking out testing and treatment.
- Women
One-fourth of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clients are female. Minority women, particularly African Americans, are the most heavily impacted. Many women living with HIV disease face socioeconomic and other barriers, like intimate partner violence and responsibility for child and family care. Women who receive care from the RWHAP are far more likely to be retained in care and have viral suppression than those not receiving RWHAP services.

Integration of HCV Treatment within an HIV Clinic
The University of California San Francisco, San Francisco General Hospital HIV Clinic developed a care model to enhance access to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment among people with HIV by co-locating care and creating a multidisciplinary team. Developed as part of the RWHAP Part F SPNS Hepatitis C Treatment Expansion Initiative, this model of care led to a considerable decrease in the number of people with HIV who were coinfected with HCV among the patients served by San Francisco General Hospital during the 2010 and 2011 demonstration years.Resource from the RWHAP Best Practices Compilation updated on 04/30/2024
